Teaching or Traveling

Teaching or Traveling? Why not both?

When I was in second grade, my dream was to be a teacher. I am a Kindergarten Teacher and I have been teaching for the last 14 years. So you can say I am living my dream.

As I got older, I dreamed another big dream. My new dream was to be able to see the world. A five years ago, I followed my dream and started to travel. My long weekend trips turned into going somewhere for a week during the holidays. That eventually turned into going somewhere for the entire summer. Now, I am traveling for the entire year! My school district granted me a year long Travel Sabbatical! Yes! dreams do come true!

Teachers in the classroom oftentimes think that traveling is not possible because traveling can be very expensive. And it's true, traveling can be very expensive. But with careful saving and planning, dreams of traveling the world can become your reality.

I am a classroom teacher of 14 years. During these 14 years, I have traveled to over 20 countries. I have traveled with family and friends but mostly, I have traveled alone. Solo traveling allows me the flexibility to travel as much as I want and for as long as I want. Not all my travels have been extravagant but I have explored and adventured to more places than I ever thought I could. I have always loved to explore and adventure to new places.

Yes, traveling can be expensive and yes, teachers do not make a lot of money. But traveling is possible. You can come up with a million excuses why you couldn't travel. Then you will never go. Manifest your dream into reality. Say you will go and take all the possible actions to make your dream come true. You can start with taking one small step to make some changes in your life. Once you put your mind and focus on your dream, your life will be changed forever.

I am going to share some things I have learned during my travels to make traveling more affordable. Some travel expenses can be dramatically reduced if you are willing to allow yourself to let go of the misconceptions of traveling as expenses. Try changing your mindset to traveling as an experience. Studies have shown that spending our hard earned money on experiences actually makes people happier. And come on, experiences does not have monetary value, right? Experiences change who you are, it opens your mind and heart to unlimited possibilities. The value of these experiences can alter your perspective on how you're going to spend your time and money. You get to pick and choose your experiences just like you pick and choose your battles in life.

Flight

The most expensive price tag on traveling is the airfare. I always check airfares on Tuesdays. From my experience, Tuesdays are days when new promotions come out from different airlines. Make sure you go "incognito" on Google Chrome before you start researching for your travels. This is a hack I learned early on when I started researching places to travel to. I've read books on travel hacking and traveling on a budget. I learned that the more people who search trips to certain areas during certain times, the analytics and algorithms of the websites you visit drives the price up. I use google flights to search where the cheapest destinations are "incognito". Usually round trip flights are cheaper than one way flights. So definitely be willing to research different routes and options. Sometimes buying a route with a layover to your destination might be cheaper. You just don't take the second leg of the trip. Also check the airline's actual websites as well to see if the company is running any promotional flights. Sign up for travel newsletters and airlines so that you can always be on the look out for the best deals!

Accommodation

I love staying at hostels because it's such a fun place to stay with other travelers and meet new people from all over the world. It's also probably the most affordable if you are traveling long term. With that said, it's also a place where people stay to hang out and mix and mingle. With 2020, traveling has forever changed what it used to be. Hostels might not be the ideal choice, but all hotels, hostels, airbnbs have raised their bar in keeping everyone safer and healthy. I have noticed an enhanced level of cleanliness all around. So, I started to stick with places that are slightly more expensive but I have the comfort of knowing that I have a clean, safe place to stay where I can social distance and be on my own.

A few tips on booking hotels is that first check on websites such as Hotels.com, Booking.com, other travel comparison sites to compare prices and then check out the actual hotel websites as well. Sometimes prices are very different on all the websites so please shop around before committing to a hotel. I love to book at places that gives flexibility on cancellations and I always make sure I read all the reviews.

Experience

Experiences are what makes traveling memorable. Experiences are the reason why I love to travel. I love unexpected moments and starting each travel day with a general plan but being open to new opportunities and experiences. I love meeting new people especially meeting the locals and learning about the history and their stories. Serendipitous moments like these makes traveling more fun and meaningful. It takes you outside your comfort zone and opens your eyes to other people's way of life. There is so much to learn from other's history, cultures, traditions, foods, experiences, which brings everyone together.

A part of traveling to different places is also to learn the history about each place. I enjoy visiting cities with rich history I learned when I was in school. Each city and country I visit always has free walking tours which is how I start my exploring when I get to a new place. From there I start exploring by walking around to see where my two feet can take me.

New experiences can come in many shapes and sizes, different budgets and it can look different depending on what you want to do. It can be costly or it can be completely free. I always try to stay on the side of affordable but if there's opportunities where an experience sounds too great to pass up, I will splurge on the experience and cut something else in my budget.

Food

Food is usually the highlight of my trips. I love looking for new, unique local cuisine to try. My favorite places are usually what is recommended by the locals who live in the places I'm visiting. When you go to local spots, the prices are usually more affordable compared to touristy restaurants. Some of my favorite things eat while I travel are street foods. Fresh, small portions, quick and affordable bites to eat on the go. Sometimes I would splurge and treat myself to a nice meal at a fancy restaurant but it's rare. I would always prefer to eat small, quick bites and explore and adventure more outdoors.

Conclusion

Traveling like a teacher may not be an ideal traveling experience for most people. But traveling on a budget, I was able to travel to 20+ countries in the last 5 years and for longer periods of time each time I left the comfort of my home.

Budget friendly traveling allowed me to truly understand and appreciate the little things in life. I began to realize that I have a lot more than most people my age and it is a privilege to have this incredible life and be able to have so many travel opportunities. For that I am truly grateful and I do not take that for granted at all. Given the life I was given, I worked very hard to get to where I am. I want to make every moment count and live life to the fullest. Making little moments big and making big moments meaningful is my ultimate goal in life. Whether it's in the comfort of my own home or traveling the world, gaining experiences and stepping outside the comfort zone, my safe haven, is the only way I know how to continue my life and learn more about this world that we all live in.

First Day of School

Today was the first day I missed the hustle and bustle, the jittery and anxious feeling of not sleeping the night before because of the excitement of the first day of school. This is my fifteenth year in the field of education.

Wow, it’s my Quinceanera!

The reason I missed the first day of school was because I am on a Sabbatical this year. In my district, teachers can apply for a year of Sabbatical once you’ve reached your 7th year of teaching. The selections depends on seniority but with 14 years under my belt, I was graciously granted the Gift of Sabbatical. I have been planning mine on my 15th year to coincide with my son’s departure for college. This year I am taking the year off to travel but first, I get to take my son to college! We leave in T-minus 5 days on a road trip up to Washington. It is a surreal feeling of excitement and sadness and mixed emotional colors of the rainbow.

I celebrated today, while everyone else got ready for the first day of school, with my favorite hike. It was filled with the most absurd weather: tropical thunderstorm weather in the BAY AREA!!! Hot, humid, muggy, thunder, lightning, wind, rain and sunshine! It was an incredible experience!

Here is a picture I captured during my hike!

Here is the brunch I could not finish

because I had to find shelter!

The storm moved in quick!

The weather was one for the books! Nothing I’ve experienced in the Bay Area.

I hope that with Distance Learning, school will look a lot different this year but learning and growing will continue. I want to wish everyone a safe and happy first day of school. Sending everyone love, light, and positivity all year long!

My Love for Hiking

Hiking has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Hiking and exploring in nature has been a therapeutic adventure for me. The warm sunshine on my face, the sound and feel of the wind all around me, the soft earthy feel of the trail underneath my boots, the sound of water flowing down a stream or rushing over a cliff, birds chirping in a distant; all these sensory experiences are unique each and every hike. Hiking has become a whole body workout for me- from my mind to my toes and everything in between.

Being in nature has given me an opportunity to improve my physical and mental health. The quality time I get to spend in my thoughts allows me to reflect. My mood is completely changed after a hike and my stress levels are lowered. I am more calm and somehow my anxiety has disappeared. My state of mind is completely altered. Hiking has also improved my sensory perception to really appreciate the world as Mother Nature presents herself. Gratitude is an incredible gift I receive after a day of hiking outdoors.

I've been on some amazing hikes and here's a few of my favorites. I can't wait to go on more hiking adventures and explore!

First Day of My Travel Sabbatical

Hello Sabbatical! Today is my first day of my Travel Sabbatical. For the next 12 months, 365 days, 8760 hours, I am committed to making it count. Because traveling is very limited right now, I am making last minute decisions based on the guidelines set forth by the Health Department.

My travel plans are vast, but my intentions to grow and learn about myself in the next year are bigger. To paint the picture of what my next year will look like is just a vision in my head. It is a blank canvas ready to be painted. All I can share for now is that I am committed to travel safely and utilize this time to set new goals for myself and my future.

Here's a little bit about me. I am a Kindergarten Teacher in San Francisco, California. I have been a teacher for 14 years, almost all those years in Kindergarten! It has been my dream to be a teacher since I was in second grade. So you can say, I am living my dream!

I became a Mom at an early age and my son is going off to college this Fall. With an empty nest and having carried out my dream for the last 14 years, I am grateful for this opportunity my district has granted me to take the year off and travel. I am fortunate in many ways and over the next year, I want to give back and share my story.

What now? Follow my journey. I'll be updating my blog here and sharing my travels through my social media platforms. Please follow me:

phuket, thailand

in phuket, i stayed at kata beach which is a little south of the main area (patong) many flock to when they are in phuket.  i heard kata beach is quiet and not as touristy as patong. i stayed in fin hostel which i loved. it was nice and clean. the beds were comfortable although the top bunk was so high that i fell off once (thank goodness sebastian was there to catch me, thanks sebastian!).

i spent the first day walking around and exploring the neighborhood. i loved that the hostel was walking distance to the beach. i realized that i wouldn't mind spending my whole time in phuket on the beach. but i did want to see big buddha so i made my way there the next day.

me and big buddha

the view from big buddha

met a baby elephant

there were so many food carts right on the beach with authentic thai made to order from a local grandma

a meal is never complete without coconut juice

party tuk tuk!

i still wanted to check out patong so some friends i've met at the hostel decided to venture out together and check out the ping pong show!

can you believe the variety?! they kept on saying "you'll get to see all the pussy power"!

last walk to the beach!

i'll leave the ping pong show to your imagination but it is definitely an experience i would not explore twice. if you want details, i'll be more than happy to talk about it in person. it was quite a show! the whole bangla road was covered with hustlers trying to make money. it was nothing like anything i've seen before. i loved how all the guys loved the show and all the girls were grossed out and very uncomfortable. i was in the middle where i couldn't believe the things that they were doing but i was also amazed by their talent (i have to call it talent...i don't know what else you would call it)

beaches in thailand are amazing. kata beach and karon beach were the two i went to in phuket. the warm crystal clear water...it felt great! a lot of people surf here but i don't know how since the waves are so small but there were quite a bit of surfers that i've met. after swimming in thailand, i don't want to go in the water in cali anymore! i could only imagine why our water is not as clean as thailand. i'm going to miss the beach life...i feel blesssed to have experienced the beauty of all the beaches on my first leg of the trip. i'm looking forward to chiang mai since everyone's told me it's their favorite city in thailand!

krabi and koh phi phi, thailand

krabi

i had my first hostel experience in krabi, thailand. i stayed at the pak-up hostel. what a great first experience! the room was nice and clean, the bed was comfortable, but best of all this hostel was organized so that travelers can meet other travelers.  i met so many great people and ended up hanging out with them and traveling together.

it is so HOT in thailand!!! like take a shower and walk out and start sweating immediately kind of hot!

the reason i wanted to visit krabi was bc i thought krabi was a beach city but there are no beaches anywhere :( it was such a disappointment for me and as well as others that i've met. krabi is a great location to get to other islands and beaches so that's what i did.  i took a long tail boat out to railay beach.  it is absolutely gorgeous there!

i'm on a long tail boat!

long tail boats

such a beautiful beach ;)

hungry?! order from the long tail boat restaurant

there was no nightlife in krabi except at my hostel!  i walked around krabi with some friends to find that the only happening place in the whole town was at our hostel bar...

pak-up's weekly activities...drinking games galore! i think i made up for all the college partying i missed by hanging out at the hostel bar!

i had a lot of fun staying at this hostel but i wouldn't recommend staying in krabi for anyone visiting thailand.  visit other islands and stay there...

koh phi phi

this island was recommended by so many people but it was not what i expected.  i thought i'll be arriving at a small secluded laid back island but i was wrong!  i ended but up in a tourist trap island!

the beach is amazing and the island is beautiful!  there are so many things to do and see!  but it is a party island.  surrounded by so many tourists, this island has tourist shops everywhere, restaurants have high prices (i mean still cheap but the prices are doubled here), tourists are seen as dollar signs and are approached by the locals abbrasively.

at night, the whole island is turnt up!!!  i was in total shock as to what the island turned into at night but i loved every minute of it...surrounded by drunks and more drunks, i got to see all the crazies get loose!  unknowingly i booked a hostel right on the beach that turns into a nightclub with fire shows, fire limbo (such an adrenaline rush shimi-ing  under the fire), 420 being sold at the bar (i should have known since the hostel is called Stones), drink buckets everywhere with music blasting from every hostel on the beach with so much bass, people getting bamboo tattoos like they were giving it out dor free, it was such a shit show!  it was such an unique experience!  but the calm after the storm i what enjoyed the most!

my thai restaurant! chai thai restaurant ;) walking around eating and exploring

friends i've met along the way...waiting for the sunset...you can see how amazing the sunset was...all those colors changing and evolving all throughout the sunset...breathtaking!

i wish you could have experienced it with me! it was one of my favorite part of the trip so far.

this trip wouldn't be the same without all the yummy food...

pad thai

spicy fried fish

street food...fried everything!

meat skewers galore!

panang curry with rice...thai spicy is not jane spicy...so i had to add more chili!

my first coconut! i didn't even like coconut juice...until now!

it was great to have the beach to myself in the morning when the whole island was still sleeping...just chillin with my coconut :)

my trip has been AWEsome so far!  solo traveling is different from what i expected bc i'm really never alone.  it's actually hard to find time on your own.  other travelers are amazing and so friendly...like minded people discovering or rediscovering themselves.  i've enjoyed many conversations...it's crazy to talk to a complete stranger for hours at a time and at the end you realize you've met someone special who you wouldn't have met otherwise...life is truly full of surprises!  i believe in the goodness in all people and recently i felt like i was wronged by ones who i deeply cared about but traveling has me believing again...

hostels i stayed at:
krabi- pak-up hostel
koh phi phi- stones dorm bar and restaurant
